Bay Shore is one of the older hamlets on Long Island. Sagtikos Manor, located in West Bay Shore, was built around 1697. Originally purchased from the Indians in 1701 and established by an English Royal Patent in 1708, Bay Shore has steadfastly retained its unique heritage as a waterfront community.  It was used as a British armed forces headquarters at the time of the Battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War.  President Washington stayed at the manor during his tour of Long Island in 1790. Bay Shore became renowned in the late 19th century for its shopping district and resorts. The rural hamlet became popular with affluent New Yorkers looking to escape the city to the white sand beaches of the Great South Bay and the fishing villages of Fire Island. It was a tourist spot on weekends and during the summer, in large part because the newly built Long Island Rail Road enabled easy access from New York City.

Bay Shore continued to grow steadily into a bustling, thriving community, becoming the “Gateway to Fire Island”, while maintaining the quaintness of an old, small, fishing village with Victorian homes, canals, waterways, docks, and marinas.

Even today, its winding Main Street is a center for retail specialty shops and family businesses with strong ties to the early founders, standing tall along the picturesque waterfront it embraces.

Bay Shore’s location on the Great South Bay provided the livelihoods of its earliest residents – fishing, clamming, woodcutting, and salt hay harvesting. Great South Bay is one of Long Island’s magnificent summertime playgrounds. A haven for boaters, bathers, and sport fishermen. A source of endless fascination for kids. And in the biting cold of winter, a place for coffee and contemplation near the water’s edge.
